Updates on Kevin’s Health Journey

First Update

Hi everyone!

This is where we’ll be posting updates on Kevin’s treatment and how he’s doing. If you haven’t already, check out the About AML and Journey Timeline pages for the full background. This first post is just to get everyone caught up to today.

Over the 4th of July weekend, Kevin and his mom Marie relocated to Baltimore for the transplant. Marie is with him full time as his caregiver, and they’ll be staying in the Baltimore area through the end of September, per Hopkins protocol, since this stretch carries the highest infection risk and the team wants him close. Jess is at home with Zia, since kids aren’t allowed in the treatment areas, and gets down to visit when she can. Since arriving, Kevin has gone through the conditioning chemo that comes before transplant, had the transplant itself, and is now on the immunosuppressants that follow to help the new cells take hold.

This next part is the hardest stretch medically. Kevin is managing several symptoms and a few infections right now, which is typical and expected at this stage. He’s tired, but he knows he’s in good hands with his mom and the team at Hopkins. Updates may come slower than we’d like too, since Jess is juggling a 2 year old and a job search at home, so a quiet stretch doesn’t mean anything’s wrong.

Thank you to everyone who has checked in, brought food and gift cards, watched Zia, taken us out, sent messages, or helped in any other way, big or small. It’s meant a lot, and we’ll keep you posted here as things progress.
